If you all really know me, you'll know that my favorite appetizers are anything fried and stuffed. There's something about the flavors of fried dough that are just perfect for savory, sweet, salty, and even spicy foods! I was in the mood for something mildly spicy with a rich cheesy base so I decided to create some mini jalapeño and cream cheese stuffed wontons. Wonton wrappers are originally found in Chinese cuisine and used to make dumplings. I chose to fry mine, a common method used, similar to egg rolls with the absolute perfect filling. I blended together 3 types of cheese, avocados, fresh jalapeño peppers and an array of spices. These were gone so quick I don't how I even managed to snag a photo!
I served these cute appetizers sprinkled with pickled jalapeños for a slightly sour taste! They went perfectly with all of the flavors.
Before adding in the peppers to the mixture, I seeded them to take out the extra heat. However, if you like things a lot spicier then you can throw in some of those seeds into the filling!
Spicy flavor? Check. Creamy and cheesy filling? Check. Fried exterior? Double check. This appetizer is probably one of my absolute favorites that I have ever made. They were so easy to make and definitely worth every minute spent making them! They are a perfect finger food to serve at parties or game nights with no mess! In the first bite alone, you bite into a crispy golden wonton shell that is then met with an explosion of amazing flavors. Once you make it past the wonton wrapper, you get a rich and creamy filling that is filled with peppers, cheddar cheese, mozzarella, and cream cheese.
Before you know it, you'll be reaching for more! They are so addicting and don't be surprised if they are the first to go at your dinner party! You can also serve them with a sweet and sour dipping sauce that will balance the heat perfectly! What I love most about these is you don't have to be an expert in rolling or working with dough. It's a simple fold and you're done! You guys are really going to enjoy these!
Prep Time: 20 minutes Yields: 30 Wontons
Cook Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 30 minutes
INGREDIENTS
8 oz. Cream Cheese, softened
1/2 cup Shredded Mild Cheddar Cheese
1/2 cup Shredded Mozzarella Cheese
1 Avocado, cubed
1/2 tsp. Garlic Powder
1/2 tsp. Onion Powder
1/4 tsp. Salt
1/4 tsp. Black Pepper
1 1/2 tsp. Cilantro, chopped
2 Jalapeños, seeded and diced
1 Package Wonton Wrappers, I used the Nasoya Brand
1/2 cup Vegetable Oil
INSTRUCTIONS:
In a small bowl, mix evenly the cream cheese, cheddar cheese, mozzarella cheese, avocado, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, cilantro, and jalapeños with a spoon. Make sure the ingredients are combined well.
Starting with one wonton wrapper, lay it on a flat clean surface so that one of the corners is pointing at you, in a diamond shape.
Add 1 tsp. of the mixture in the center of the wrapper. Bring the corner of the wrapper that is closest to you and match it with the corner opposite to it, forming a triangle. Before pinching the seams together, dip your finger in some water and run it along the sides of the seam to ensure that there are no air bubbles or openings.
Close the wrapper up and repeat with about 30 more wrappers until the filling is done.
Heat the vegetable oil in a medium skillet over medium-high heat. Place about 5 wontons in the skillet and fry them for about 2 minutes on each side, until it is an even golden brown on both sides.
Repeat this process until they are all fried.
Serve and enjoy!
Note: If you don't want to make all 30 wontons at once, you can refrigerate the mixture up to three days!
